MLK Day: "A Day On, Not a Day Off"

Happy New Year! We haven't talked much since the campaign and I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday season.

As I am sure you know, this coming weekend is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. To celebrate Dr. King's legacy of service and social justice, organizations throughout the country are hosting "Days of Service" on Monday.

I personally will be participating in CEDO's day of service in Burlington, "A Day On, Not a Day Off." This service project is one of hundreds of activities that states and cities are organizing to honor the legacy of Dr. King. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings.

During my campaign for Lt. Governor hundreds of folks joined us during our “Service Politics” events throughout the state. I again hope you can join me in a day of service. Find an event near you or join me in Burlington.

To Many Days On in the Future,

To all who have been a part of this amazing campaign:

I'd like to first congratulate Brian Dubie on his victory. This was a spirited race, particularly towards the end, and a testament to the excitement of the democratic process.

I would also like to thank my wife Sarah who has been so supportive through this odyssey that has lasted nearly a year while completing yet another book and doing more than her fair share of caring of our little boy.

And a sincere thank you to all my supporters who believed a Lt. Governor's race could matter and that we could change the way we do politics in this country through incorporating community service. My incredible campaign team was a constant inspiration to me and to many around Vermont who now have a renewed belief that politics can matter.

While we narrowly missed victory at the polls, the impact of this race will be felt well beyond election day. I look forward to continuing the passion and momentum to create a Vermont even more extraordinary than the one we were so lucky to inherit from the amazing leaders that came before us.

Sincerely,

Matt
